Course Description: This course is a worldwide survey of prehistoric cultural adaptations from the first use of bone and stone tools to the ancient mysterious civilizations of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe, including recent archaeological discoveries. Emphasis is on the development of technologies, social groups, and the patterns of cultural development. Archeological excavation methods and archeological artifacts are discussed in considerable detail. In the second half of this course the student will engage in a “virtual dig” of a Middle Paleolithic site in France, using a workbook and a CD-Rom.

Course Description: Introduction to the history of what has been popularly known as the "Underground Railroad" with particular attention to African American efforts (with or without assistance) to resist slavery by escaping to freedom. New York State's Freedom Trail initiative informs our collective work, as does the federal Underground Railroad project undertaken by the National Park Service. Highlights the importance of Underground Railroad properties/sites in connection with personalities and events in the decades between the American Revolution and the Civil War. Special attention to the work of Harriet Tubman and other important "conductors" active in New York State's "North Star Country." Upper level undergraduate or graduate standing required. Students should have a general knowledge of pre-Civil War American/African American history.
